The hand behind every piece

ARTISAN POTTER IN PORTUGAL
THE STORY AND CRAFT BEHIND CLAY'MILIE

Not a brand. A hand, a clay, and the desire that each piece truly matters.

Before I tell you about the pieces, I want to talk to you about what comes before them: the silence of the studio, the clay still cold in my hands, that precise moment when a form begins to take shape. It’s not about production. It’s a slow conversation with the material.

My name is Emilie. And Clay’Milie is me, entirely.

What clay taught me that nothing else could

INDEPENDENT CERAMIC ARTIST: THE APPROACH AND GESTURE BEHIND CLAY'MILIE

I didn’t take up pottery to ‘make pretty things’. I was drawn to it because of what it demands: slowness, mindfulness, and the impossibility of cutting corners. Clay doesn’t forgive hesitant movements, and that’s precisely what I love about it.

Every piece bears the mark of the hand that made it, not as an imperfection to be corrected, but as a signature that nothing can falsify.

What caught my attention was the drape. The way fabric falls, folds, and catches the light in its folds, and the question it raised for me: what if clay could do the same? Since then, I haven’t looked for any other direction. I didn’t take up pottery to ‘make pretty things’. I was drawn to it for what it demands: slowness, presence, the impossibility of cheating. Clay does not forgive hesitant movements, and that is precisely what I love.

What "handmade" really means here.

ARTISANAL CERAMIC CREATION PROCESS
FROM SHAPING TO ENAMEL, WITHOUT COMPROMISE

01

The shaping

By hand, without a mold, without a standardized template.

02

Drying

Slow, which sometimes reveals the first cracks that I choose to keep or not.

03

The first cooking

which transforms raw clay into biscuit.

04

Glazing

Where everything can still change, the heat of the oven decides as much as I do.

05

The final cooking

At over 1200°C, the part emerges as final

The unpredictable element I'm looking for.

UNIQUE CERAMIC GLAZES, TEXTURES AND COLOURS IMPOSSIBLE TO REPRODUCE

Glazes are what fascinate me most. They are what give each piece its final finish, whether matt, satin, crackled or pearlescent. I work with complex formulas, which often take a long time to perfect, to achieve effects that no one else can replicate without the same choices, the same kilns and the same techniques.

But even I cannot guarantee that the next piece will look exactly like the one coming out of the kiln today. It is this element of chance that I have learnt to embrace, and which you, in turn, receive as something that no one else will ever possess.
